May 19, 2013

We had a tornado warning tonight!  At about 5:45 p.m., we got a call through our temple telephone chain, which told us to find a safe place in our apartment and stay there.  We moved chairs and books into the hallway in the middle of our apartment.  John listened to the weather news on his radio, and we were soon told that the tornado warning in Hancock country had been lifted.  The winds and rain were a little fierce for a short time, but it cleared up beautifully later.
We’ve seen an increase in the number of people visiting Nauvoo in the past week.  Some families with children out of school early have come on purpose before it’s so crowded.  We met nice families from Scottsdale, Arizona and Hawaii last night.
We are visiting the historic sites a few at a time so we will be familiar when the family comes.  So far we’ve been to the boot making shop, the brick yard, the Browning gun cabin, and the Family Living Center where they demonstrate pioneer crafts such as rope making, barrel making, pottery, weaving, rag rugs, bread making, etc.  It’s fun for families because they have kids participate.
The summer schedule begins next week on the Memorial Day weekend.  The young performing missionaries are practicing for their show “Sunset on the Mississippi”.  There will be a number of shows, including Rendezvous, Amanda Ann, and the pageant.  Two groups from BYU will be here in June to perform – the BYU folk dancers and Vocal Pointe.  We’re planning to enjoy all of them.
On our Preparation Day Wednesday we went to Burlington, Iowa, where they actually have a mall.  We shopped at Target and then went to a 3:45 movie – “42” – the story of Jackie Robinson breaking into baseball – excellent movie!  Harrison Ford is great as Branch Rickey!
We’re becoming more familiar with the temple and our assignments there – the schedule is different every day so we don’t have a chance to get bored.  On our Saturday afternoon shift, we have met a number of District workers.  There was a family sealed Saturday – two little children – before the Dad heads off for military duty.
I even got to plant a few flowers – I thought that wouldn’t happen this year.  We have two very small planter boxes in front of our apartment.  We went together with the other two couples who live in our building – Willes’es and Forti’s.  We bought mulch, and the men worked it into the soil – also a small area on the side of the house for tomato plants.  We went to Ace Hardware in Keokuk and bought an assortment of annuals – vinca, petunias, verbena, and marigolds – about six dozen plants in all – and had fun planting them.  We also planted three tomato plants on the side of the house.  We’ve had so much rain the past week we’ve hardly needed to water our “garden”.  We hope it will grow beautifully.
